Brian Wilson returns to Liverpool for last leg of Pet Sounds Tour

WHEN 75-year-old Brian Wilson announced that he would be returning to Liverpool for Fifty Summers of Love celebrations and one of the final dates of his Pet Sounds tour, die-hard fans couldn't believe it.

Bringing an all-star line up of Beach Boy co-founder Al Jardine and guitarist Blondie Chaplin who gave a soulful rendition of Sail On, Sailor, offered an exciting and poignant performance - one which will probably never be recreated.

Kudos to the sound engineers and team at the Exhibition Centre who undoubtedly worked their socks off on this performance.

Brian, although aged, sang a select amount of tunes and shuffled off stage before the music finished to allow the band of highly-skilled musicians to have their chance to shine.

And his spontaneous jibes and throwbacks to the past warmed the coldest of souls as he fluttered between tracks without little or no introduction.

It would be criminal not to mention another genius - Matt Jardine, Al’s son and Brian in reincarnation.

In 1991 Matt auditioned for Beach Boys and earned a spot as a lead and falsetto vocalist, background singer and percussionist.

He originally toured with the Beach Boys from 1990 through to 1998 and performed on three of their studio albums.

Matt's voice carried the infamous high-pitch vocality, perfect for tracks such as Don’t Worry Baby, and key for almost every track on the bill.

Starting off with an one hour performance of Beach Boy hits the night was christened by California Girls, seeing everyone bop about in hawaiian shirts brought us together in the moment of watching history unfold.

A 38-track strong set is certainly something rarely experienced, the only one that comes close for The Music Manual was when we saw Paul McCartney on his Out There tour in 2015.

At 9pm Brian and his incredible band took a 20-minute breather before coming back to rattle their way through Pet Sounds - from Wouldn’t It Be Nice to Caroline, No.

After what seemed like an unfair ending, the band came back for a six-track encore after each member was introduced to a humorous musical interlude.

Fan favourites such as Good Vibrations, Barbara Ann and Surfin’ USA had audience
members at the back jiving along to the surftastic tunes flowing from the main stage.

Paying homage to these tracks allowed those who perhaps didn’t know the whole Beach Boy back catalogue gave them a chance to sit back and enjoy.

Ending on a track which gave its name to the Brian Wilson biopic Love and Mercy starring Paul Dano and John Cusack, the night was crowned by Brian’s maturely aged vocals and unequivocal prowess.

Mr Wilson certainly knows how to put on a good show - we love you Brian.
