Michael Robert Murphy, the long-awaited solo project from the former frontman of Liverpool's adored Wicked Whispers, has released debut single Out Of Sight.

The new material has signs of the old and the new woven deep into the foundations while still continuing to tap into that true Scouse sound that nothing from anywhere else compares to.

Written in a pre-coronavirus world and taken from forthcoming EP Metamorph, Out Of Sight is an eerily prophetic tune that almost foresaw the challenges that many are currently facing.

It's conception came about when Michael took a 4-track lo-fi home recording to Cains Brewery Village based studio The Cabin and sat down with local producer Alec Brits.

It was here where the extra sprinkle of magic happened, with them capturing a polished rawness in the recording, fitting for the track's disjointed, kooky lyricism.

With nods to the likes of The La's second single Timeless Melody, Out Of Sight has this rather mindbending familiarity as if it's deeply personal to the listener. Probably deriving from the deep emotional and mental journeys we're all going through at this time.

Opening with that big 90s britpop guitar that derived from old psychedelic riffs, Out Of Sight has a burgeoning instrumental that is glued to you for days.

This honest earworm is an upbeat jangle of obscurity and grit. Just what us Merseysiders are made of.

Soon, you'll all even be able to take a peek at the tongue and cheek accompanying video lovingly directed by Dan Hewitson of Freakbeat Films.

Michael and Dan were filming at VideOdyssey, a retro VHS inspired space situated at Toxteth TV but were left with half video once lockdown was announced.

Left with a decision to make, the pair were inspired by Weezer's Buddy Holly video and set about ripping some 80s David Letterman footage to create a true music video masterpiece.

With no indication as to when live music can return, you'll be able to get your next Michael Robert Murphy fix when EP Metamorph drops in Autumn.

AFTER exploding onto Liverpool's music scene in 2018, locals The Heavy North are set to release their latest single Lying To Yourself on Monday 4 May.

Recorded and mixed by guitarist and producer Jose Ibanez at 3rd Planet Studios, the new release follows on from December 2019's single As Long As You're Here With Me.

The five-piece, who have played a handful of live shows including support slots with Temples and Cut Glass Kings, are offering a gutsy swamp-like blues rock which listeners are lapping up across the country.

Lying To Yourself has a slow-burning Louisiana style groove, perfect for switching off and losing yourself within the dreamy bassline and unflagging beat.

Vocals from frontman Kenny Stuart are key to the bluesy heart that The Heavy North live for.

The almost psychedelia tinged instrumental of the chorus erupts into a rip-roaring taster of what's to come if you haven't yet seen them live yet.

Speaking about the single, Kenny said: "Lying To Yourself is about those people in everyone's lives who are struggling - either with their own demons or addiction, and they feel they can’t always be themselves.

"Those people who can often lose their way and get swept up in the party, whilst keeping those who care about them at a distance.

"But most of all, it's a song about telling people that you're there for them when they need you most."

The Heavy North are set to headline Jimmys, Liverpool on Saturday 19 September - 12 months on from their headline show.

LIVERPOOL'S own Dr Orange have unleashed their fully-loaded, gutsy debut Comes in Threes onto the general public to bring us out of insanity this month.

The first solo venture of Scouse songwriter Chas Moody, formerly of Ladies, Dr Orange also consists of familiar faces - Ryan Lavery of Bobby West and Sam Burkett of The JJohns.

Comes in Threes was originally planned for release in July alongside a string of shows but, due to the current coronavirus pandemic, the decision was made to bring forward the release to April 4 - with live dates still to be revealed.

Recorded with producer Jon Withnall, who has worked with the likes of The Coral and Coldplay, this heavy-laden track of zany chords and synths is almost an ode to the late-60s underground scene of psych-rock.

A surefire local anthem when played live, this earworm has a memorable beat which churns masterfully with the track's singular vocals, really coming alive with the additional harmonies during the chorus.

Telling a tale of mental health and the patterns it follows, Comes in Threes is a track many will find solace in.

Speaking about the single, Dr Orange said: "Comes in Threes is one of the rare times you write a 3 minute song in 3 minutes.

"Usually when I’ve tried to take my music in a certain direction my subconscious has answered by writing every style of song other than the one I want to.

"This tune, however, dropped out of nowhere and was on the money.

"Roughly speaking the song's about mental health and some of the patterns and rules I've come to realise I follow."

With two more tracks to come this year, Comes in Threes has opened up a can of excitement among the city's underbelly of music for Dr Orange - watch this space.

Children of the State

VINTAGE rock purveyors Children of the State have released their latest, hotly-tipped single Big Sur.

Hailing from Doncaster and Bolsover, the indie-rock outfit have also unveiled the track's video, shot and directed by Sam Crowston.

Made up of John McCullagh, Nathan Keeble, Corey Clifton, Conor O’Reilly and Harry Eland, the band are making it their mission to merge the glam rock of the 70s and nostalgia of the 60s to create a sophisticated, modern sound of today.

Big Sur is at the epicentre of this creation.

Having been produced by The Coral's Ian Skelly and engineered by Chris Taylor at the iconic Parr Street Studios, Big Sur ventures way back to the holy grail of music.

With a deep burgeoning groove pulsating throughout, Big Sur has a doo-wop inspired vocal melody partnered effortlessly with kooky organ playing and a fuzzy guitar solo.

It has a dreamy, far-out there instrumental which benefits from the warmth of the lyricism, taking listeners on a journey to a place they hold most dear.

Speaking about the track, Children of the State said: “Big Sur was born out of a lot of grey days on an industrial estate in Doncaster wanting to be at the beach.

"We were listening to a lot of Dick Dale and Beach Boys at the time and wanted to capture that 60s surf sound but bring it into 2020, but struggled to capture the vibe in Sheffield.

"We figured we’d get closer to the coast, so got in touch with Ian Skelly from The Coral, and spent a few days there creating it.”
In a statement, Africa Oyé said: "With Government advice warning against all public gatherings for the foreseeable future in order to halt the spread of the Covid-19 virus, the decision was made by the Chair Sonia Bassey, the Festival’s Artistic Director, Paul Duhaney and the charity’s Board of Trustees, to cancel the event until further notice."

HAILING from Melbourne, Primo! are set to release their second full length album Sogni on April 17 via Upset The Rhythm giving us all something to shout about in these dark times.

To celebrate the new release, the quartet have issued a video or their latest single Machine.

Borderline psychedelia with a numbing vocal, Machine tells the tale of av work-hierarchy struggle with the video showing the band rock boiler suits while working on some retro wheels.

This fresh sound is similar to that of Nice Biscuit, another Aussie outfit who caught our eye during Liverpool Sound City in 2019.

Talking about the new single, drummer Suzanne Walker said: "It’s the feeling of being like a machine inside the machine but as well the fact that sometimes great ideas, thoughts and observations come to you during the working day, in unexpected ways.

"Rhythmically the pacing is like that of a machine, speeding up and slowing down, at times frantically chugging, spattering vivid bursts of greasy colour before halting to a stop and slipping the key from the ignition.”

Following on from the band's debut Amici, released in 2018, Sogni focuses on a multitude of topics such as decision-making, change, time, heartbreak and the practicalities of work and daily life.

Spanning just under 30 minutes the guitar-laden album features an upbeat core with lashings of post punk and little injects of electronic musing.

The twelve track album was concocted in a rehearsal room before being recorded to an 8-track with Al Montford across several home studios in Melbourne.
THE first three live acts for this year's Africa Oyé have been revealed.

Returning to Sefton Park for its 28th annual event on 20 and 21 June, organisers of the award-winning festival of music and culture have revealed pan-African supergroup Les Amazones D'Afrique, Ghana's Santrofi and Cameroonian songstress Valerie Ekoume.

A voice for gender inequality, FGM and ancestral violence, Les Amazones D'Afrique made a huge impact with debut album République Amazone in 2017 - campaigning for change for women across the world.

Next up is Ghanaian collective Santrofi, made up from a group of talented young musicians, they create a soulful blend of dance-guitar and funk.

French-Cameroonian singer Valérie Ekoumè's career began in 2004 when she toured with Manu Dibango and the Soul Makossa Gang and for her latest album, she has teamed up with producer, arranger and drummer Guy Nwogang, digging deeper into her Cameroonian roots.

Africa Oyé will bring plenty of live music, DJs, dance, workshops, food stalls and traders to the park for a two-day takeover, completely free of charge from 12.30pm to 9.30pm each day.

Also returning as part of the event will be the Oyé Active Zone, providing free workshops across the whole weekend, suitable for all ages.

DJ stages Trenchtown and Freetown are also expected to make a grand return.

The news of the line-up reveal follows a call to action from organisers who are stressing the importance of donations to keep the festival alive and thriving, ensuring it remains free entry.
Softie, set to be released on February 28 via Wirral's Skeleton Key Records, was recorded at the city's infamous Parr Street Studios and saw the outfit pick up their made-in-heaven partnership with producer James Skelly.

The new track promises to give fans the chance to delve deeper into their electro-pop world, offering a sweet release from the trials and tribulations of modern-day life.

Self-spun young provocateurs The Gulps have released their latest video for track My Girl from Liverpool.

Formed in London three years ago, The Gulps have members from all corners of the globe who all share a common interest of 'dirty rock and roll.'

With an ever-growing fanbase the five-piece thrive from original rock roots and the artsy glamour of the 60s.

My Girl from Liverpool is taken from the band's EP In The Kings House which was produced by Martin 'Youth' Glover who has worked with the likes of The Verve, The Charlatans and The Cult.

Spending a couple of autumn weeks at Youth's home studio in Granada, the band have recorded their debut album which is scheduled for release later this year - My Girl from Liverpool being the latest hint of what's to come.

Calling it an 'ode to the 60s movement' across Europe and a nod to the civil unrest that took place in France in May of 1968, My Girl from Liverpool is a catchy track which has to be played more than once to be truly appreciated.

With psychedelic twinge to the instrumental, the track grows into this voice of a generation, speaking to those who fear that there's no hope for the future.

This is complimented by the video, directed by Sandra Crilo, which follows the band as they trawl the streets of Paris.

Clips from La Nouvelle Vague films are sprinkled throughout, with a spotlight on the late great Anna Karina.
THE UK'S largest celebration of African and Caribbean music will return to Sefton Park for its 28th year.

Taking place on 20 and 21 June, Africa Oyé will bring plenty of live music, DJs, dance, workshops, food stalls and traders to the park for a two-day takeover, completely free of charge from 12.30pm to 9.30pm each day.

The announcement follows on from incredible 27th year which saw the festival break its single-day attendance record and receive two accolades at the Liverpool City Region Culture & Creativity Awards.

The first wave of artists are scheduled to be revealed next month and organisers are promising to continue showcasing some of the very best local artists.

Artistic director Paul Duhaney said: "In 2019 we focused on the amazing music from across the wider African Diaspora, so this year we'll be looking at a more traditional Oyé line-up.

"Local artists will once again open the music offering each day via our Oyé Introduces programme, and we'll again be showcasing community acts, giving some Liverpool creatives the chance to share the stage with world music stars."

BEYOND the walls of the great minds that form Psycho Comedy there's a growing movement for change.

Speaking after the release of their second single Standin', the beguiling post-punk artisans have become the voice for 'unconventionals' everywhere.

Their new single, Standin', released on December 12 - General Election Day, is their latest middle finger to the establishment.

Although it may have seemed timely, the track had actually been written some four years before, Psycho Comedy said: "The song was written in 2015 and as a country we have declined since then.

"We felt that it was relevant to release it around the election with a video as well, painting that message.

"This election has been the biggest in recent times for our generation."

Although the result of the election was an undesirable one, Psycho Comedy continue to speak for those who don't have a voice.

This is something that has been evident in the response, "The single has gone down really good to be honest," says frontman Shaun Powell.

"It’s got a good chorus that you can’t forget so people have been singing along at shows or walking past.

"It’s had some good airtime on BBC radio stations including 6 Music’s Steve Lamacq show."

Standin' follows the first single Pick Me Up from this cohort of artists who combine music, poetry, performance and visual art.

Haunting vocals combined with a catchy chorus and an oh-so memorable instrumental is what helps push this track to a new dawn of Psycho Comedy.

To us locals Psycho Comedy are our worst kept secret, they're breaking the mould and rewiring the multi-media platform that music once used to be with the likes of the Velvet Underground and Patti Smith.

"We are an art collective and not just a rock n roll outfit.

"We have Matthew Thomas Smith who is a poet and Sophia Rose Powell who is our in-house artist," explains Psycho Comedy.

"By keeping it all in house we have full control over what is put out.

"We would like to think that the artwork and videos portray the music and messages perfectly.

"With the video for Standin', Sophia wanted to project the message from the lyrics of the song but also still feature all of the group as a family.

"You can see images of austerity stricken Liverpool and the corrupt government throughout."

Before burying themselves underground recording their debut album for the best part of the summer months, the collective spent March 2019 touring and even played The New Colossus Festival while over there.

Psycho Comedy's debut album Performance Space Number One is set for release on Valentines Day via Silver Machine Recordings with fans being able to catch the band at a launch party prepared for Jacaranda Phase One the following night.

Talking about the album, the collective said: "Performance Space Number One is raw and artistic in its entirety.

"It’s a concept record from a schizophrenic mindset from Shaun Powell.

"All songs are musically diverse but all have a passionate intensity."

So the collective are now set to embark on an adventure of a lifetime, with their eagerly awaited debut set for release and a stint on tour with Mick Head - there's a lot riding on 2020 for Psycho Comedy.

A PUBLIC consultation on a masterplan aimed at transforming the epicentre of Liverpol's music heritage has been launched.

The public are asked to give their views on a draft Spatial Regeneration Framework (SRF) for the Cavern Quarter including Mathew Street and Williamson Square until Friday, November 22.

The draft SRF contains recommendations which the council say will help 'attract new investment' to the area and enable them to steer future use of existing buildings in the area.

It also addresses a recent tourism report calling on the city to curate a clearer proposition around Liverpool's role in popular music and its music heritage industry - which is currently worth more than £90m each year.

The draft SRF was created by a team led by P-IE (Planit Intelligent Environments) and included: Arup (Planners); Fourth Street Consulting (Destination Development and Economics); GVA (Property); Dave Pichilingi (Music History and event planning) and Rob Burns (Heritage).

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “Liverpool’s musical heritage is an asset of global significance.

"This draft masterplan presents an opportunity for the city to examine how we establish an experience which reflects and celebrates that unique offer.

"I welcome these proposals and look forward to the public’s thoughts and feedback.”

Once it receives final approval the plan will be used to guide all future planning applications within the area.

It will become a Spatial Planning Document when Liverpool’s Local Plan is formally adopted in Autumn 2020.

Here are some of the proposals outlined in the draft:

Cavern Quarter

Enhance the area’s daytime offer and resist proposals for further bars and nightclubs

Re-purposing upper floors and specific support for music related businesses

Enhance the quality and mix of attractions related to the City’s music, culture and heritage to promote a multi offer experience to visitors

Upgrade gateways into the Cavern Quarter

Activate key nodes within the quarter, which offer opportunities for events and public art

Restore and enhance the character of the area including improving street furniture and building facades

Animate blank walls and surfaces as part of a wider art and digital strategy

Whitechapel

Enhance the approach to Williamson Square and the Cavern Quarter via a mix of new public art, trees, lighting, balanced street principles and improved wayfinding

Develop a strategy to celebrate and interpret the street as the original 'pool of Liverpool'

Williamson Square

Re-design the square to include flexible performance space and enhanced public realm including seating and planting

Enhance the Playhouse’s presence on the square – spill out areas, programme of events

Activate the façade of the vacant Marks & Spencer building

Stakeholder Boards are also suggested in the plans to assist in delivering events and activities.

Have your say at the following public events:

Friday, November 8 from 10am to 3pm One-Stop Shop, St Johns Market

IN a middle of a threat to life weather warning we found ourselves wandering through the Baltic Triangle to reach the Gustav Adolf Scandinavian Church.

Seeking refuge inside the dome shaped place of worship with our blue carrier bag of booze we took a pew on the back row next to a heater.

We arrived early and took in the beauty that surrounded us for this extra special sell-out Violette Records show.

The church was adorned with tea-lights in glass jam-jars dotted around the pillars.

Warmth circulated the venue as familiar friendly faces passed through and also took their seats.

Matthew Loughlin Day

Opening the evening was Shipbuilder's front-man Matthew Loughlin Day who aired his solo-work to the observant audience.

It was a refreshing change to hear different material such as Going to the Well.

Next it was Steve Pilgrim, co-founder of Be One Percent, the original drummer of The Stands and he has even worked with the likes of Paul Weller and John Power.

He came with a warning us that he had just been stuck in a car for eight hours travelling back home from Woking.

Pilgrim also talked about his work with double bass legend Danny Thompson and performed tracks such as Morning Skies and Beautiful Blue.

Then it was time for headline act Studio Electronique.

If like I, you live your life day-dreaming, Studio Electrophonique is the perfect soundtrack for you.

Steve Pilgrim

It's solo musical venture from James Leesley which he described as music created by a semi-fictional band.

Sounding akin to Bill Ryder-Jones and Alex Turner's soundtrack to Submarine, Leesley's debut elp album 'Buxton Palace Hotel' is masterful.

Fairy lights spelling out Electrophonique were placed in front of his keyboard - he pointed out to the audience that this had taken a painstakingly long time to create and that it's a nightmare to transport.

Walking through the middle of the pews from the back of the church to a cabaret-like instrumental, Leesley sat down at his keys.

He moved between his set from keys to guitar performing his gentle musical catalogue, opening his set with You Had Me Hanging On.

Songs such as I Don’t Think I Love You Anymore and Ill With You showcase Leesley's self-proclaimed hopeless romantic persona.

All the tracks featured had been recorded at his home studio in Sheffield, purely for the love of making words fit melodies and melodies fit chords and he captures all of this on his tape machine.

A special moment when was he covered In My Room by the late-great Liverpool legend Jimmy Campbell and features on his 1970 album Half Baked. Leesley told the audience how he originally thought it was by Billy Fury but had been corrected.

Leesley ended the set on Jayne. A beautifully crafted track which I would say is probably my favourite from Buxton Palace Hotel.

It's not only touched me but fellow Sheffield music maestro Richard Hawley even invited Leesley to open for his band in London and Holmfirth in May 2019 after hearing the beguiling track.

ONE of the UK's best known finger picking style guitar players Michael Chapman is heading to Liverpool this week.

First making his name on the London and Cornish folk circuits in mid-1966, Chapman signed to EMI's Harvest Label and recorded classic albums such as Rainmaker, Wrecked Again and Fully Qualified Survivor.

He will be heading to the beautiful St Bride's Church on Percy Street on Saturday, October 5 for a night presented by Nothingville and Mellowtone Records.

Joining Chapman will be Liverpool's own Nick Ellis.

Troubador Ellis is known for blending streetscape narrative-noir with a classic British acoustic approach.

His third album, Speakers' Corner was released on October 6 and follows on from Adult Fiction and Daylight Ghosts.

Speakers' Corner very much captures the mutual consensus of the majority of the public in Britain today.

Faced with uncertain political waters, constant threat of violence, gender imbalance and human neglect, right now the country is in a state of duress, yet, Ellis manages to capture this feeling in just 12 tracks.

MOTOWN legends Martha Reeves & The Vandellas will return to Liverpool next month.

Soul sensation Martha recently appeared on Celebrity Masterchef and has now revealed she will perform live with her seven-piece band at Hangar 34 on October 24.

Expect hit tracks such as Nowhere to Run, Jimmy Mack, Dancing in the Street and Heat Wave.

Based in the heart of Liverpool's Baltic Triangle, Hangar 34 is one of the hottest new venues to pop up in the city in the last five years.

Born in 1941 in Alabama, Martha Reeves shot to fame in the 60s when she joined a group then known as The Del-Phis.

Throughout the sixties she worked several jobs in the day then performed at night, singing jazz and blues at nightclubs in Detroit.

She was spotted one night by an A&R director at Motown who invited her to audition but she ended up working with the label.

In 1961 The Del-Phis changed the names to The Vels and in some co-incidence, the 'Queen of Motown' Mary Wells couldn't make it to a recording session so Martha stepped in with her band - it was then when Martha and the Vandellas were born.

The last time Martha Reeves performed in Liverpool was at the famed Eric's in 2018.

Tickets are priced at £28.95 and are available via https://bigcitysoul.com/ or via Skiddle.

THE heavily anticipated debut album from Wavertree native Marvin Powell is a modern-day masterpiece.

Released on September 13 via Skeleton Key Records, Dust Of The Day is the culmination of years of hard work from singer/songwriter Powell.

Recorded at The Coral Caves in Hoylake back in 2016, this labour of love was mixed and engineered by James Skelly, Richard Turvey, Alfie Skelly and Tim Cunningham.

Opening with fan-favourite Buried, this ten-track album is an escape from every-day life.

Having followed Powell for several years it is rather precious to have a songbook album to now refer to.

Emotive, sombre and triumphant are three words we would pick to describe Dust Of The Day.

A personal love would be Wind Before The Train - a beautiful track which has been rejuvenated with a pulsating foot-tapping beat and chords that race with the whispery vocals.

Opulent Heart is another that catches the soul, it's a wistful number with a heartbreaking poetic lyricism.

The track of which the album takes its name is of a quickening pace but everso soothing.

Dust Of The Day is one to listen to while the rain pours yet you're wrapped up cosy on the couch with a warm drink, reflecting on the past and people who have passed by.

One track receiving a huge applause is Samsara, a slightly more up-beat number on the tracklisting.

Powell casts this interesting witchy spell over Samsara's lyrics, instrumental and goes above and beyond to propel it into the outer atmosphere.

Each track tells a poignant story of love, life and despair - we can't get enough.
A TOTAL of 55 years have passed since legendary rockstars The Who made their first recording.

This first recording would propel the band, who have arguably the greatest rock legacy in music history, to sell more than 100 million records worldwide including nine US and 10 UK top ten albums plus 14 UK top ten singles.

To mark this incredible feat, The Who have revealed that their first new album in 13 years will land on November 22.

The 11-track album called WHO was mostly recorded in London and Los Angeles during Spring and Summer of this year and was co-produced by Pete Townshend and D.Sardy with vocal production by Dave Eringa.

Singer Roger Daltrey plus guitarist/songwriter Pete Townshend are joined on the album by long-time Who drummer Zak Starkey, bassist Pino Palladino along with contributions from Simon Townshend, Benmont Tench, Carla Azar, Joey Waronker and Gordon Giltrap.

The artwork for WHO, created by pop artist Sir Peter Blake, was unveiled on Thursday, September 12 at the opening night of an eight-storey Pace contemporary art gallery where the band also performed a short acoustic set.

To mark the release of the new album, The Who will also hit the road for a full UK Arena Tour with a date with M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool on April 6, 2020.

Fans can also listen to new single 'Ball and Chain' which features on WHO via all streaming services.

Pete said: "This album is almost all new songs written last year, with just two exceptions.

"There is no theme, no concept, no story, just a set of songs that I (and my brother Simon) wrote to give Roger some inspiration, challenges and scope for his newly revived singing voice. Roger and I are both old men now, by any measure, so I’ve tried to stay away from romance, but also from nostalgia if I can.

"I didn’t want to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

"Memories are OK, and some of the songs refer to the explosive state of things today.

"I made new home studio demos of all these songs in the summer of 2018 using a wide collection of instruments old and new.

"We started recording as The Who in March 2019, and have finished now in late August just in time to make some vinyl... maybe even some cassettes - ready for release in November."
GLASWEGIANS Declan Welsh & The Decadent West will bring their politically-charged indie punk to Liverpool this autumn.

The foursome will hit the road just a week after releasing debut album 'Cheaply Bought, Expensively Sold' on October 18 courtesy of Modern Sky UK.

Kicking off on October 31, the lads will visit Newcastle's Think Tank first before making their seventh stop on November 9 at Liverpool's Phase One.

Other nearby dates include Leeds' Lending Room on November 10 and Jimmy's, Manchester on November 11.

Made up of front-man Declan Welsh, Duncan McBride, Ben Corlett and Murray Noble, the band create an unforgiving, hard-hitting tracklisting.

Combining a deviant rock with his strongly held beliefs, songwriter and poet Declan has attracted fans from across the globe who are wanting more from their music - someone who speaks on their level.

The quartet have teased fans by releasing recent single 'No Fun' in the lead up to the new 12-track album.

It's a sly dig at at scenester culture which is found lingering everywhere in the UK's underbelly.

Declan's sharp wit and dry humour runs through the veins of this track - a common feature sure to be noted in their highly anticipated debut.
